I want to buy ‘Giselle’ on DVD. What’s the best version, that you know of?
I’m asking this right now, because I’m in the process of ‘watching’, or not watching, the 1968 version with Fracci & Bruhn. I had read some good reviews on Amazon, so I thought I’d try it with Netflix. What a disappointment! It’s more like a movie, with some dancing thrown in.
So, I’ve seen the Royal Ballet’s version. I also saw POB’s version, with Nureyev, but for some reason, from what I’ve seen of him, I’m not a huge fan. (Although, I do have a picture of his backside as my desktop picture)
So, anyway, is there a version you’d recommend over another?
I did buy the VHS version with Baryshnikov & Makarova, and had it transferred to DVD. But, the film quality isn’t so great. I’d just like a newer version to watch, also. Any suggestions?
Aleisha, I said the wrong thing when I said Nureyev & POB. I was just associating the two. It was the Royal Ballet version. I just think I’d like to find something else. Like I said, I’m not a big Nureyev fan.
I agree with you regarding the Fracci & Bruhn. The camera work is appalling! DId you see the Nureyev / Fracci (awful…both past their prime in this version) or the Nureyev / Seymour? You didn’t like the Cojocaru and Johan Kobberg Giselle? I am assuming that was the RB one you saw. The Bolshoi has one, that is a shortened version shot on a sound stage. Great dancing but poor production values. (Bessmertnova.) Have you checked out the La Scala version with Alessandra Ferri and Massimo Murru?
I think I like the Makarova with Baryshnikov. It is pretty good. I do like Nureyev having been lucky enough to see him perform live when I was a teen with Margot Fonteyn in R & J at the old Metropolitan Opera house in NYC before the days of Lincoln Center. . He pretty much blew me away. He is one that you really had to see live to get his full force on stage.
Giselle is like Hamlet. Everyone has their own person favorite. Mine keeps changing. There are a lot out there to check out. I don’t think there really is a definitive “best one.”
